It is set to "Hold" by default, meaning you must hold down the key. "Timed" displays the loot on the ground for 10 seconds. "Toggle" means loot on the ground either always shows or never shows. Under Keybindings > Targeting, there is an option of Interact with Target. If you press that key it will interact with whoever you are targeting like questgivers, looting corpses, etc. You should be able to use that in a way that works.
